BEST GCA LIAISON OFFICER (GLO)

Scarlett Yang

GAC FORWARDING & SHIPPING (SHANGHAI) LIMITED

Selection Criteria

The Best GLO award is based on their certification and the follow-through of these skills in their annual strategic planning, quarterly learning and development, and operational support in helping to ensure the success of participants in their courses.

Scarlett Yang, Administration Manager at GAC Forwarding & Shipping Shanghai, has been awarded the Best GCA Liaison Officer (GLO) Award in 2015. Scarlett has been working with GAC for nine years and is passionate about making new employees and existing staff get the most out of their learning and development. “We cultivate staff’s learning interest from their first date of joining and we nominate staff to participate GCA courses based on their actual training needs. We believe it is easier for them to be engaged in the courses and improve when they want to learn. Most staff will achieve best course outcome by themselves, if some have difficulty in course completion, I will coordinate with staff and their direct manager to find the problem and offer help where necessary. We also score staff’s learning performance (willingness to learn) in their year-end performance appraisal, so we take it very seriously.”

Scarlett believes that learning and development not only improves staff job performance, but staff are an asset of the company, so any investment in their training will benefit both staff and the company. “In our China office, staff are enrolled in GCA courses as per the job level and business area and each staff member is expected to complete at least one course per year. We then share the best performing staff’s learning practices with all staff by email, thereby not only motivating others to learn from them but also encouraging staff to excel
in their own courses.”

BEST REGIONAL PARTICIPANT

Americas (AME) – Anna Matherne

GAC AME Regional Office, USA

Selection Criteria

The Best Participant Awards are based on a weighted measure of the number of courses completed in 2015, number of CSF5 hours and average grades over all courses.

Anna Matherne, Regional Communications Manager – GAC Americas, has taken out the best Participant Award for the AMERICAS region based on her three GCA courses and average grade of 96.39%.

Anna explains why she believes why ongoing learning and development are so important: “I think that learning and development is essential to anyone both on and off the job. At GAC, our development as employees or managers only helps to further the Group’s commitment to quality service. And as individuals, GAC has proven its commitment to valuing
its employees through the investment in our own growth.”

“The courses helped me to better understand the company as a whole. It helps you focus on what the core values of GAC are and where you fit in. Without knowing how everything works – or learning from other individuals – you cannot feel successful in your job”, she says.

In terms of the most interesting aspect of undertaking the courses so far, Anna really enjoyed learning what other participants do on a daily basis at work. “Meeting fellow employees from different walks of life and different countries come together to learn the same things you’re learning is very rewarding. It makes you think outside your office.”

Asia Pacific (APA) – Hidir Jamal

GAC (Singapore) Pte Limited

Selection Criteria

Hidir Jamal, Senior Human Resources Executive with GAC (Singapore) Pte Ltd, has completed three courses in 2015 – IGW, HSSE and GCALiaison Officer, with an average grade of 99.72%.

One of the most important reasons for taking part in additional learning and development for Hidir is ensuring that he is up to date with the latest information available. “Learning and development for my personal growth is of paramount importance.

With the rapid change in factors like technology and legislations that will affect business operations and work processes, constant upgrading is necessary in order to ensure I am able to adapt to the new work demands and that my skills and knowledge is relevant.”

“By ensuring that I am up to date with the knowledge, skills and competencies required to perform in my work role, I am able to contribute to GAC’s vision and mission. This is like contributing in the innovation and delivering integrated services at the highest levels of quality and safety,” he explains.

Hidir is very supportive of the work and new initiatives of GAC Corporate Academy (GCA). “GCA has proven itself to be a reliable partner in the training needs of the employees by coming out with new courses and modifying existing courses to meet the current learning needs of the employees and ensuring its relevance. Having been awarded with the ISO29990 certification and various other awards is also a testament on the effectiveness and admirable reputation of GCA to provide learning and development interventions to GCA’s staff.”

Africa, Russia, Central Asia (ARC) –
Jose Lourenco

GAC Shipping and Logistics Angola LDA

Selection Criteria

Jose Lourenco, QHSSE Manager GAC Shipping and Logistics Angola, has taken out the Best Regional Participant for the ARC region, based on the three courses he completed, with an average grade of 98.27%.

Jose shares with us the impact the GCA courses had on him: “During 2015, the GCA courses I did gave me the skills to improve the day-by-day work and give me a better understanding of the company as part of a worldwide group. GAC’s vision and mission are aligned with the continuous improvement and empowerment of staff, this is only possible if we grow our training and skills. I also really appreciate the valuing of people – the GAC family. During the courses we had the possibility to meet very good friends and in some cases we build long term bridges.”

One of the main highlights and benefits Jose found after completing the courses, especially GAC TIME, was the approach to business. “Many of the good ideas we shared during the course were implemented afterwards. For example, GAC Angola now has specific QMS/HSSE/C&E teams set up for support and for further collaboration together. This is especially important after events such as the Ebola outbreak in West Africa in 2014/2015 that saw a significant impact on the shipping industry, and the way GAC Angola needed to adapt new strategies to prevent the further spread of the virus and ensure the safety of GAC staff, partners and customers.”

Europe (EUR) – Alysha Pedersen

GAC Norway AS

Selection Criteria

Alysha Pedersen has been working with GAC Norway AS since December 2014, and in the position of HR & HSSE Manager since October 2015. During 2015, she completed five GCA courses, with an average grade of 99.25%.

As part of her role, Alysha believes she continually needs to grow both personally and professionally to allow her to better support her company’s leaders and employees in their own growth. “Ongoing learning and development is crucial for growth, both personal and at the organisational level. For a company to be best able to deliver its customer’s strategy, it has to be continually learning and growing. The only way for this to happen is if the company’s greatest resource – its employees – are themselves learning and developing.”

One aspect of the GCA she believes is extremely beneficial is the fact that GAC courses are developed by GAC people for GAC people. “No matter what the subject, GCA courses are linked to GAC specific key competencies, culture and focus areas. By having an active internal educational platform, the Academy is able to develop within its participants the skills and knowledge that are desired and needed to be able to perform as GAC and its customers want and require. For example, I have learned that GAC considers quality, ethics and safety to be crucial to the company’s success and that this is more than just words in a document somewhere – but is actually operationalised.”

Middle East – Lars Hardeland

Global Hub Services

Selection Criteria

Lars Hardeland, Strategic Sourcing and Process Manager, GAC Global Hub Services, has taken out the Best Regional Participant for MEA, after completing five courses with GCA in 2015 with an average grade of 99.25%.

Similarly to Alysha Pedersen, Lars agrees that one of the key benefits of having an in-house learning organisation is having relevant content that directly associate with your everyday work. “The interaction online, with facilitators and colleagues, around the world is a great experience and gives hands on feedback, comments and answers directly linked to the business. The courses I have taken has been a good door-opener to the GAC family, its roots and what is essential for the company today, and also gives more precise tools in some business areas such Tender Management and Human Resources.”

“Knowledge is an anchor for personal growth, ongoing every day. It makes one happy, gain confidence, create challenges and to be open to changes. I believe we should always be open to learn something new, only then we can grow ourselves and in the end the company, impacting the future. GAC is a great promoter of learning and development.”
